Polished porcelain offers a tough stylish finish that should look good for many years. Its not likely to scratch like wood does, doesn't deteriorate and move like laminate and is easier to keep clean and stain free than carpet. Most people want to minimise the number of joints so are best choosing the largest tiles in your budget.
Stone tiles suit lots of installations well - especially large floor areas - but they are nearly double the cost to install instead of porcelain tiles. So get a stone effect tile that's much stronger than real stone, has a lower installation height, lower cost, no maintenance and works better with underfloor heating.
